On 15 July 2025, the European Commission released the 25th European Innovation Scoreboard (EIS 2025) along with the Regional Innovation Scoreboard (RIS 2025), delivering a comprehensive evaluation of innovation performance across both Member States and regions in Europe.
Austria is once again classified as a Strong Innovator, achieving an overall innovation index of 114% of the EU average.
Key strengths:
- 2nd in public R&D expenditure and 3rd in private R&D spending, underlining Austria’s sustained commitment to research investment.
- Top performer in intellectual property: 2nd in design applications, 6th in trademarks, and 6th in PCT patent filings.
- SME innovation activity remains strong, with Austria ranked 9th overall – including 5th in process innovation and 10th in product innovation.
