The Botanical Garden of the University of Vienna was founded in 1754 by Empress Maria Theresia (1717–1780). More than 11,500 plant species from six continents are cultivated and presented on around eight hectares for scientific research and teaching, for species and nature conservation as well as for popular education and recreation. Besides, the botanical garden houses internationally recognized research and special collections (including pineapples, orchids, lilies, coffee and Gesneria plants), which are not open to the public.
