Schools in Austria

The Republic of Austria has a free and public school system, and nine years of education are mandatory. The school year starts in early September and ends early in July.

Children aged 6-10 years: primary education (Volksschule)

Children: 10-15 years: secondary education

The secondary education offers two types of education paths:

General secondary school: 10-15 years (AHS)

General secondary schools end at the age of 15 years. They provide basic general education for four years, taking into account the individual interests, talents and abilities of the students.

Academic secondary school: 10-18 years (Gymnasium)

Academic secondary schools end at the age of 18 years with the so-called "Matura" (a general qualification for university entrance) and are designed to consolidate and reinforce a comprehensive general education and to prepare students for university-level studies.

New middle school" (since 2008) The New middle school is a unification of Academic secondary school and General secondary school.

After general secondary school, students can attend a pre-vocational year that prepares them for the working world. Students also become qualified to transfer to secondary technical and vocational schools, Academic secondary schools and colleges.
